August's Health Tip - Addiction Free
We live in a time when many of us wish to be
free of behaviours that are not beneficial to our health. The language
we use to define our health goals can have an impact on the success we
achieve. For example we talk of "quitting" as in quitting smoking
or of "losing" as in losing weight. We want to "stop"
as in stop drinking or we want to "cut out" as in cut out caffeine
or chocolate. All these words use a language of loss. The emphasis is
on what we have to give up, what we have to sacrifice or what has to be
taken away. All too often this "negative" approach results in
failure and a feeling of defeat when we return to our old patterns.
An alternative to this focus on loss is to turn it around and look at
what we are wanting to achieve. For example in the case of smoking, what
are we hoping to gain by freeing ourselves of this addiction? With improved
breathing, we gain energy, clarity of mind and an awakening of our senses.
Food tastes better, our sense of smell comes alive and our energy level
goes up. We experience a new vitality and a renewed excitement for life.
In other words, choosing to be free of tobacco is about having more, not
about having less. It's about doing, not quitting, it's about gaining,
not losing. It's about moving forward in our lives, not stopping. This
kind of positive outlook is more likely to succeed and can be used with
any addictive or compulsive behaviour.
One of the reason why emphasising what we have to "stop" "lose"
or "quit" does not work, may have to do with what lies at the
root of compulsive behaviour. Addiction and compulsion is often rooted
in an inner loss suffered at an early age. The majority of us are not
born addicted. We are born vibrant, vital, full of joy and excitement
for life. Unfortunately, whether through shaming or through guilt our
society inflicts most of us with an inner wounding, a loss of our authentic
self. At some point either by accident or by ignorance, our exuberance
for life is seriously dampened or completely buried.
Now as adults, it becomes very difficult to move on solely by way of good
intentions or strength of will. Addictions and compulsions are an attempt
to fill a perceived emptiness or hole in our lives. If we perpetuate and
repeat the pattern of loss by proposing to "quit", "stop",
"lose" or "cut out", we simply activate inner resistance
that fights change. On the other hand, we can turn things around ever
so slightly and look not at what we will lose but at what we will gain.
By doing this we activate a deeper part of ourselves. We activate and
call for courage and inner strength. We activate and call for clarity
of mind. We activate and call for commitment to our goals. This is not
a magic formula. A lot of hard work still has to be done, but changing
our attitude from one of loss to one of gain will give us an edge that
may make the crucial difference. With a clearer vision of what we are
hoping to accomplish we can move on to a fuller life!

Massage is one
of many lifestyle choices that affirms life. Having a positive vision
and being aware of what is important to us, helps us move towards the
kind of quality of life decisions that support our long term health goals.
Lifestyle choices that give us more, rather than take away become vital.
