February's Health Tip - Please Touch

Here is a wonderful Valentine's Day story.

In October of 1995 twin girls Kyrie and Brielle Jackson were born twelve weeks early at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Worcester. Both weighed just a little over two pounds at birth. Over a few days little Kyrie began to gain weight but her sister was not doing so well. The nurse, Gayle Kasparian, tried everything to help but with no success. Often gasping and blue faced, Brielle was in trouble.

Then the nurse decided to take Kyrie and place her in the same incubator with her struggling sister. The results were positive and almost immediate. Kyrie put her arm around Brielle and Brielle snuggled up to her sister. Brielle's skin colour returned to a healthy pinkish colour. Her breathing became more easy, her crying stopped and her blood oxygen returned to normal levels. Brielle's health continued to improve and both went home as happy healthy babies in a few weeks.

This story gained national and international attention in the media. A story ran in both Life Magazine and the Reader's Digest. The Internet spread the story to the four corners of the world.

The story illustrates that human contact is vital to health. Skin covers the human body and is our largest sensory organ. The contact of touch is healing. It mediates warmth, comfort and security. It is as essential to life as are food, water or air.

The story also illustrates the value of trusting our instincts. Registered Nurse, Gayle Kasparian had to make a life and death decision. In an environment where taking initiative could have cost her dearly, she trusted her instincts. This led her to try something not practised in her hospital. After this incident, she went on to participate in a study on the positive aspects of "Co-Bedding" siblings. Now the technique has become common in her hospital and in many hospitals across North America.

Lifestyle Choice:

In a modern day city environment it is essential that we make lifestyle choices that promote positive, personal and collective health. Some primal elements of being human need to be recognised and supported. Touch is healing and human contact is essential. Our natural instincts need to be valued and trusted. Regular massage is your lifestyle choice expression honouring your true human nature.

"...The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another's heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration..."

Client Feedback:

"My first experience with Jamie was that of a warm welcome. She made me feel totally comfortable. The Mini-Hot Rock Massage put me in a very peaceful and relaxing state. I could feel my shoulder knots melting away and the next day I felt rejuvenated. Jamie's session was very powerful and I would "highly" recommend her."

Photo of WI Calendar

This month I recommend you visit the Alternative WI (Women's International) Calendar's website. This is the true story (made into a movie) of a group of women who decided to raise money for leukaemia research. Quoting from their site, "The Calendar has now raised over £600,000 for the Leukaemia Research Fund." The story is life affirming, inspirational and delightful. Catch it when it comes out on DVD.
