January's Health Tip - Honouring Our Dreams
Being the start of a new year, this may be an
opportune time to talk about our dreams and personal aspirations. We live
in a society where many have become masters at manifesting material abundance.
However, if we scratch beneath the surface we find a deep sense of dissatisfaction.
Our inner lives leave much to be desired. This is partly due to the fact
that there is intense pressure to set aside our dreams. We often find
ourselves having to abandon our true hearts' desires for the "more
practical" considerations of life.

In the movie Peter Pan, Wendy's father works at a bank. He has felt forced
to set his dreams aside and place them in a dresser drawer. Late at night,
he and his wife take out his pretty dreams and admire their brilliant
and shining beauty. But Wendy's mom explains that "it's getting harder
and harder to open the dresser drawer". Wendy's father is noticing
that a deep unhappiness is slowly seeping into his home.
What does this inner reflection on dreams and
personal aspirations have to do with health? If you believe, as I do,
that we are more than an assemblage of flesh and bones, more than a clever
biological mechanism, then taking stock of our inner life becomes vitally
important for optimum health. Denying our dreams leaves us feeling empty.
I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say that many of us suffer
from unhappiness. Without our dreams to guide us, we drift aimlessly.
We are tossed about by powerful pressures that incessantly invite us to
a "need more" consumerism.

It's natural to seek a certain level of physical
comfort. However, we have the right to stop and step off the thread mill.
We have the right to consider the direction we are taking. We have the
right to examine whether we are accomplishing that which truly satisfies
us. We have the right to ask "are we working to live or living to
work?"
It all has to do with balance. The obligations
and duties that we must attend to, do not have to completely bury our
dreams. We must challenge the conviction that our dreams and personal
aspirations are incompatible with the business of "making a living".
Giving voice to our dreams can become a resource that supports and guides
our day to day efforts.

In their book"Practical
Dreamer's Handbook" Paul and Sarah Edwards encourage us to begin
this creative process. Being more than just a call to "stay positive"
their book emphasises the need to dialogue with both our dreams and the
fears that hold us back.
The first step is to know what our dreams are.
Stop for a moment and ask yourself what your dreams and personal aspirations
are. Do you come up blank? Here is an exercise that you may find helpful:
Write a list of your favourite past times.
What do you like to do?
What makes you happy?
What leaves you with a sense of fulfilment?
What makes you feel more alive?
What excites you?
What do you feel passionate about?
Write down both the activities that you presently do and the activities
that you'd like to do that would answer the questions above.
Now look over your list.
Answer the following questions:
In the past year how much of your time was spent doing the things you've
listed?
How often were you able to do the things that you truly like?
In the future, is there a way that you can bring these activities more
prominently into your life?
Is there a way you can integrate these activities with some of your
"more practical" duties?
Use the the above exercise, to both start the
process of identifying your dreams and to see how much of a role your
dreams play in your life today. The things we truly love will reflect
our inner heart's desires. They are a manifestation of our dreams and
personal aspirations. Knowing what you are passionate about is the key
to knowing your dreams. In turn, the way you spend your life will tell
you what importance you are able to give to your dreams and personal aspirations.

Joseph
Campbell called on us to "Follow Our Bliss". This is daunting
advice if you are raising a family, trying to pay the mortgage and/or
hold onto a job. But our dreams do not have to interfere with our obligations.
To the contrary, listening to our dreams and personal aspirations can
be a great and "practical" resource that will help us move forward.
Giving voice to our dreams will reduce stress. Giving voice to our dreams
will reduce tension caused from living contrary to their calling. Giving
voice to our dreams will help us move closer to fullfillment. Take the
time in this new year to entertain the possibilities that your dreams
and personal aspirations offer. Take the time to listen to them and playfully
allow them room in your life. Honour your dreams and personal aspirations
and enjoy their manifestations.

Lifestyle Choice:
As time goes by and we grow in age, we may find
an urgency in having our lifestyle choices reflect more closely our true
heart's desires. We may not always be able to change our lives instantly
in the way that we'd like. At the very least, let us allow our dreams
to have voice in the choices that we make daily. We have a choice in the
lifestyle we lead. We can follow our dreams with eyes open or we can follow
someone else's dream blindly.

Quote:
"If you don't know
the kind of person I am
and I don't know the kind of person you are
a pattern that others made may prevail in the world
and following the wrong god home we may miss our star.
For there is many a
small betrayal in the mind,
a shrug that lets the
fragile sequence break
sending with shouts the horrible errors around us
storming out to play through the broken dike.
And as elephants parade
holding each elephant's tail,
but if one wanders the circus won't find the park,
I call it cruel and maybe the root of all cruelty
to know what occurs but not recognise the fact.
And so I appeal to a
voice, to something shadowy,
a remote important region in all who talk:
though we could fool each other, we should consider-
lest the parade of our mutual life get lost in the dark.
For it is important
that awake people be awake,
or a breaking line may discourage them back to sleep;
the signals we give-yes or no, or maybe-
should be clear: the darkness around us is deep."

Let's Go:
This new section features suggestions for places
to go in the Kelowna area where you can "let go" and have a
bit of fun. Its purpose is to encourage your support of "local"
Kelowna events and businesses.

Kelowna is suddenly hopping with several great
places offering live music and dancing. A new discovery and sure to become
one of my favourite places, is The
Blue Gator - Home of the Blues on Lawrence Avenue.
You can dine, dance and listen to live music
seven days a week. Click on the logo above or phone 860-1529 for more
details.

This new section of

This site showcases beautiful Wind Harp Sculptures
that play music as the wind passes through them. I've heard a recording
of these harps and they sound sublime. My husband is so taken by these,
that he's written to Kelowna City Hall suggesting that they acquire some
for our city parks. What
do you think?
