July's Health Tip - Choosing a Health Practitioner
If we commit ourselves to optimum health, we
soon realise the need to take personal responsibility for our own well
being. Choosing the right health practitioner to support our health goals
becomes crucial. It can sometimes be difficult to know who to turn to.
Some people will make their decision based solely on what "school
of thought" a health practitioner belongs to. Some will only trust
the "medical profession". Other will turn exclusively to "alternative
medicine". It would be nice if things were that easy, with the good
guys and gals wearing the whites hat and the bad wearing the black hats.
There are many criteria that a person can apply when looking for health
support. A practitioner's reputation, experience, training and certification
are just a few. Christiane
Northrup MD in her book "Women's Bodies Women's Wisdom"
suggests an added and somewhat more "subjective" criteria. She
proposes that we look to our own inner wisdom. She encourages us to evaluate
how we feel after seeing a health practitioner. What is our level of trust
for this person? Does the practitioner seem respectful of their own health?
Have we been treated with respect? Are we being heard? Do we feel better
after seeing this practitioner, or do we feel consistently worst? Are
we moving in the right direction? Are we gaining a better understanding
of our health or are we being pushed to blindly trust and abdicate our
responsibilities?
The important thing is that we learn to trust ourselves. Our trust in
ourselves needs to be encouraged and supported by those we turn to. No
matter how intelligent or educated a practitioner may be, he or she cannot
afford to ignore the resources we have to offer. Each and every one of
us carries an intimate knowledge of our own bodies. The practitioner may
be knowledgeable as to the "mechanics" of the body, but as DH
Lawrence says, we are more than parts and pieces of a machine. Ultimately
we live with our decisions. We either grow in awareness of our health
or become more alienated from ourselves. The positive support we receive
from those around us is vital.

Lifestyle Choice:
Massage is a
lifestyle choice that can increase our awareness of our level of health.
While the skill of the massage giver is important, the person receiving
a massage also has a role to play in optimising the massage experience.
Massage can be a perfect opportunity for us to tune in and listen to our
bodies. A quiet focussed attention, while receiving a massage, can help
us to see where and how we hold tension in our bodies. Under the right
circumstances, the massage experience becomes a great source of personal
knowledge and will benefit us both physically and emotionally.

Quotes:
"...I am
not a mechanism, an assembly of various sections. And it is not because
the mechanism is working wrongly that I am ill. I am ill because of wounds
to the soul, to the deep emotional self..."
