July's Health Tip - Dandelion

Who would think of their front yard as a source of healing? Who would look to a city lot for a potential health ally? Who would give a second thought to an "annoying, troublesome weed"? Sometimes the most mundane places will yield precious gifts. Sometimes treasures are to be found right under our noses.

This is certainly the case to be made for the Dandelion. Despised by most urbanites as a weed, it is the target of long hours of sweat and toil spent in an effort to eradicate it. Bent on having the "perfect lawn" the Dandelion is cursed and reviled. Yet, it would surprise many to learn how helpful the Dandelion can be for humans, due to its potent healing qualities.

Originally a native of Greece the Dandelion is of the Sunflower family. It's official name, "Taraxacum officinale" is derived from the Greek word "taraxos", meaning "disorder", and "akos" meaning "remedy". "Officinale" indicates its recognition as a medicinal herb.

Its English name comes from a 15th. Century French surgeon. He named it "dent de lion" which translates literally to "teeth of the lion".

The first written record of Dandelion use comes from 7th. Century China. It is mentioned in Arabic records in the 10th. Century and first mentioned in Europe in 1485. The Dandelion was brought to North America by early European colonists who valued its medicinal properties. It was also quickly recognized as such by the local native population who added it to their list of healing herbs.

The Dandelion is unique, in that most plants are either prized for their healing properties or their nutritional value as a food source. The Dandelion, however can be used for both. It is rich in many essential vitamins and minerals. Its beta carotene content is higher than carrots. It is also loaded with Vitamin D, E, B complex and C, as well as trace mineral salts and the minerals iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, potassium, boron and silicon. Its calcium content is so high as to make it an ideal remedy for calcium deficiencies.

In European and North American folk medicine, the Dandelion was used as a remedy for haemorrhoids, gout, diabetes, rheumatism, arthritis, eczema and other skin conditions. In Asian folk medicine, it was used to treat chronic ulcers, breast cancer, stiff joints and tuberculosis It was also used to induce milk production in nursing mothers and to soothe inflamed breast tissue.

Today's modern herbalists recommend the use of the Dandelion as a detoxifying herb and blood purifier, flushing the liver and kidneys of toxins. It is also recommended as a diuretic (elimination of excess fluid). It is believed to be superior to pharmaceutical diuretics because it does not stress the kidneys, will not deplete the body of potassium and will not cause potentially dangerous electrolyte imbalances.

The Dandelion is also suggested for use in preventing and treating bladder infections, as a digestive aid, as an appetite stimulant, as an aid in weight loss (improved metabolism), for constipation, and for insomnia.

It is said to be useful for both PMS symptoms and Menopausal symptoms. Because the Dandelion stimulates the circulation of blood to the whole body and strengthens weak arteries, it is considered ideal for treating problems of high blood pressure.

Traditional Chinese Medicine ranks the Dandelion (named Pu Gong Ying) as one of the top ten herbs in the Chinese Medicinal collection.

It is also interesting to note that in Chinese Medicine, the liver is considered to be the seat of repressed negative emotions. Because the Dandelion is such a potent liver cleanser, it is often recommended as a way to clear the body of stagnant emotions such as anger and fear. If you feel stressed and like an emotional volcano ready to explode, you may want to consider using the Dandelion for relief.

You can prepare Dandelion leaves as a salad, cook the leaves as you would spinach, drink tea made from fresh or dried leaves or have Dandelion coffee made from their roots. You can also make Dandelion wines and Dandelion vinegar and Dandelion tinctures are available.

As with previous herbs mentioned in this newsletter, I highly recommend making a Dandelion herbal infusion as one of the best ways to maximize its benefits. Visit Susun Weed's site for instructions on preparing an herbal infusion. In Kelowna, you can buy Dandelion leaves in bulk from Nature's Fare. For optimum medicinal potency, make sure to only buy herbs that are protected from both air and sunlight.

My own personal, anecdotal experience with drinking Dandelion herbal infusions, is that it is a great, calming and soothing drink. I find its use to be positive and beneficial to my health. It always leaves me with a strongly noticeable sense of balance and well being. I hope you will have a chance to try it and enjoy it.

*As with all herbs, always consult your physician if you intend to use Dandelion and are taking prescription drugs or over the counter medicines. I have read no warnings on the use of the Dandelion for people not taking prescription drugs or medicines. I always encourage my readers to consult their physician should any concerns arise.

Net Gems:

This section of the newsletter, features locations of interest on the World Wide Web.

Collage Image of Warren Kramer's Work

Warren Kramer Design

My husband chose this month's "Net Gem", because of a strong desire to share the sense of excitement and inspiration he derives from viewing this site.

Some of the site's highlights include:

Make sure to visit the Design Seminars, if you have a small business or are curious as to what makes some print and web advertisements so clear and clean, while others just give you a headache. Also, take a look at the Emotion ECards page for some "high class" e-cards that you won't be ashamed to send to friends. There's nothing "cheesy" about these.

The whole site is worth a visit. Take a moment, browse, dig deep and enjoy the creative talent featured here. You won't be disappointed by the time invested.
