June's Health Tip - Focus and Anxiety
In the late 70s Marie
Louise Van Franz warned of a disturbing trend in modern life towards
an inability to focus. This was well before the Internet, cell phones,
video games, satellite TV and portable CD players became so popular. She
considered our inability to focus one of the most dangerous problems facing
our collective well being.
We live in a time of anxiety. Our senses are
over loaded daily with constant visual, audio, mental and emotional stimulation.
To maintain a high level of health, it is important that we be able to
relax. Somewhere we need to be able to find within ourselves a place of
quiet and peace. Our ability or inability to focus may be the key.
Research into brain wave activity suggests that
it is impossible to both focus our minds and be in a state of anxiety
at the same time. Learning to focus can become an invaluable tool when
dealing with anxiety. If we are suffering from anxiety, it may be useful
to consider learning focus techniques. Here is a simple exercise that
takes very little time out of our day:
- Find a private, quiet place and close your eyes.
- Breath through your nose.
- Gently bring your attention to your breath.
- Give yourself permission to be totally present in the moment.
- For this small period of time, allow yourself to completely let go
of the past and future.
- As thoughts come up, simply observe them, without judgement or attachment.
- Do not try to stop or in anyway alter them.
- Simply watch your thoughts but keep your focus on your breath.
- Focus on your breath as you breath in.
- Focus on your breath as you breath out.
- Continue for at least two minutes or more.
This exercise can be helpful in dealing with
anxiety. It also helps us to gauge our ability to focus. Some people may
find that focusing for two minutes at a time is tremendously difficult.
Some may experience great discomfort in that quiet place away from distractions.
But a focused mind is a first step in dealing with the day to day anxiety
and stress that we face in our modern time. There are many ways that we
try to compensate for the anxiety that we experience. This exercise is
a harmless way with lasting value and no negative consequences.

Lifestyle Choice:
We make lifestyle
choices every day of our lives. The level of satisfaction we gain from
our choices is worth evaluating. The anxiety we experience may serve a
purpose. It may be alerting us and trying to get our attention. Ultimately
our lifestyle choices will be reflected in the quality of our life and
the contributions we make to life.

Quote:
"...In an
overloaded, stressed society, in need of contact, strength and leadership,
the healthy relief of a non-intrusive massage treatment, with no unhealthy
side effects could be a literal lifesaver and a stroke of sanity..."
