Triumbphant Woman
March's Health Tip - Skin is Alive

Last month's Health Tip addressed the importance of human contact and touch. The sense of touch is one of the bodies most important senses. This sense is mediated through our skin, our Health Tip topic this month. Skin is our bodies largest organ and one that is often taken for granted. Yet care for the health of our skin is vitally important.

In the past, the function of the skin was believed to be obvious and limited. Protection, temperature regulation and fluid loss prevention were seen as its main purpose. But recent studies are finding that the skin is a far more complex organism.

Skin is alive, a living, breathing organ taking in oxygen, moisture, nutrients and discharging carbon dioxide, waste and toxins. Highly active in defending our immune system, the skin also plays a crucial role in our nervous and endocrine system. The skin is a biocreative organ processing and metabolising proteins, lipids and sensing molecules. An average adult's skin is composed of three hundred million cells.

Understanding the essential function of our skin helps to ensure that we give it careful consideration. Our skin mirrors our overall health. A healthy person will radiate wellness through their appearance, most notably with clear, supple, glowing and resilient skin.

There are a few simple practices that can be followed to support and maintain healthy skin.

  • Water:
Dehydration and ageing are directly linked. One of the simplest and best things you can do for your skin and your health in general is to drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water a day.
  • Breath:
As mentioned previously our skin breathes. Constrictive clothing, long periods indoor, smoking and a polluted environment take their toll. Use as little make up as possible and take makeup off at night to enhance the skin's ability to breath.
  • Nutrition:
Make sure to include lots of vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains in your diet. Eat animal products in moderation. There are some indications that acidic foods, excessive dairy, chocolate and caffeine may cause skin problems. Be aware of your diet and its effect on your skin.
  • Cleansing/Exfoliation:
Steam baths and saunas have long been recognised in traditional societies as the most efficient way to cleanse and detoxify the skin. Take a cool shower after each session to close the pores and wash away toxins. Use a*loofah or exfoliating sponge on a regular basis to assist in the shedding of dead skin cells.
  • Oils:

Our skin must be able to retain water in order to be healthy. Cells composing the outer layer of the skin's epidermis and largely responsible for water retention, are held together by lipids. These fat like substances love oils rich in Omega 6 fatty acids. Hemp Seed oil is a favourite and can be used both internally and externally as a massage oil. Cold pressed, un-hydrogenated Flax Seed, Canola and Olive Oil are also highly recommended dietary aids to skin and overall health.

  • Sun Protection:
Most people are now aware of the dangers that overexposure to the sun poses for our skin. Use common sense, protective clothing and quality sun screening agents when enjoying the pleasures of the sun.
*Please consult your physician if you have acne or other skin conditions and are unsure about any the above.

The word skin is connected to the Latin work "integumentum" which suggests the word integrity. Skin contains who we are and ensures our integrity and wholeness. It deserves our care and attention and an understanding of the vital role it plays in our health.

Quotes:

"...Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frighten us...Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel unsure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within...As we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others..."

Client Feedback:

"I have received many wonderful massage sessions from Jamie. Jamie has also provided on-site massage for some of our guests. I find her approachable, fun-loving, up to date and professional. I particularly appreciate her availability at the farmers/crafters market. As a B & B owner/operator, my day-timer is not my own. It is difficult to schedule things. The market venue allows me to receive a much needed massage on a last minute basis. Thank-you Jamie."
