Net Gems:
This section
of the newsletter, features locations of interest on the World Wide Web
found and described by my husband, John.
Last month our "Net Gem" was a mandala
site. This month I've come across this beautiful site on labyrinths
which are also mandalas. This site is home to The
Labyrinth Society. For those unfamiliar with labyrinths, they are
geometric designs meant to be walked as a form of meditation/contemplation/prayer.
The Labyrinth Society describes them as "a single path or unicursal
tool for personal, psychological and spiritual transformation. Labyrinths
are thought to enhance right brain activity." The president of the
Labyrinth Society further describes them as "...an archetype of transformation.
Its transcendent nature knows no boundaries, crossing time and cultures
with ease. The labyrinth serves as a bridge from the mundane to the divine..."
When my wife first started "Honouring the Inner Process," (an inner guidance service) we chose the labyrinth design as her logo and symbol of inner healing. We were attracted by its universal occurrence in the mythologies of the world. We were also intrigued by its new emergence in the western collective psyche after having be disregarded for several hundred years.
Over the years, we've been fortunate enough to "walk the labyrinth" in many divers locations, such as Downtown Vancouver, Naramata, Sorrento, Nelson and Winfield. My own impression from the experience has always been a subtle sense of "grounding" and a touching in with a part of myself not always obvious in the hustle and bustle of day to day life.
This site will give you various avenues to discover/rediscover all aspects of the labyrinth and its potential positive influence waiting to be activated in your life. Here are some links to pages that caught my eye.

to Make One
Did You Know?
- We have our very own labyrinth right here in Kelowna. It is located
at the First
United Church on Bernard. I found no mention of the labyrinth on
their website but was told to come by Monday or Friday afternoons as
they are the quietest. You can also walk a labyrinth in Winfield at
Emmanuella
House of Prayer.
- The labyrinth design dates back to prehistory and is found in the
mythologies of our early ancestors throughout the world.
- There are 98 Canadian labyrinths listed with the Labyrinth
Locator, 23 in BC and an incredible 1,531 labyrinths listed in the
United States! Not all labyrinths are listed with this service.
- Mazes and Labyrinths are different. A maze is meant more as a puzzle
or as a riddle. It tends to activate "left brain" activity.
A labyrinth on the other hand with its inevitable path to the center
tends to favour "right brain" activity such as contemplation
and imagination.
- The Chartres Cathedral labyrinth was covered by chairs, unused and its purpose unknown to local church officials for several hundred years. Things changed in the late 1990s when Lauren Artress wrote her book "Walking a Sacred Path."
