How much would you be willing to pay for a miracle cure proven to greatly reduce the chances of breast cancer, heart disease and diabetes? What would you give for a magic pill guarantying longevity of life and good health into old age? Would you be surprised to discover that a brisk one hour daily walk will produce these results?
British historian, G. M. Trevelyan once
wrote "I have two doctors, my left leg and my right leg".
While common sense tells us that a sedentary lifestyle poses a threat
to our health, we still need the assurances of "modern science"
to confirm the obvious. |

What modern science is saying with study after study is that the benefits of walking are undeniable. A daily walk will reduce stress, reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, breast cancer and colon cancer. It will help lower blood pressure and will increase your intake of oxygen which helps to burn off calories. Walking works all the major muscle groups, including the upper body. Walking strengthens and tones the body, keeping it fit and healthy.
The benefits of walking extend beyond disease prevention and physical improvements. Walking can help with depression and foul moods. When we walk, the brain is stimulated into activating endorphins. These are the body's natural opiates, our built in access to bliss. Walking stimulates an increased production of serotonin, which also has a positive effect on moods. Walking can be seen as a natural antidepressant without side effects or costs.

If you are in relationship with someone you love, walking can be a rejuvenating experience to share. In its primal essence, walking becomes a ritual of connection and intimacy. Whether in silence or in conversation walking is the perfect ground for nurturing and encouraging relationships to grow. While the stress of modern living often leads to confusion of the heart, walking gets us out of our heads, into our bodies and facilitates access to deeper feelings and emotions. |
|
|
If you are engaged in an important venture, a daily walk will provide some distance, objectivity and space to activate creative thinking. Walk with a colleague involved in your project and use the time for brain storming and problem solving.
The beauty of walking is in its simplicity. As a species we have been walking for millions of years. We have been riding horses for several thousand years, driving cars for a little over a hundred years and sitting on the couch watching TV for less than sixty years. We are "hot wired" to walk. It's in our bones, in our flesh, in our archaic cellular memory. Our whole being responds positively to walking.

Here in Kelowna we are fortunate to have easy access to many spectacular walking areas. A favourite of mine starts on Abbott Street on the south side of the bridge and follows the shore of Okanagan Lake through City Park to the Rotary Marshes and then up along Brandt's Creek.
Click here for a list of parks in the Kelowna area. Find a park that will inspire you to enjoy the pleasures of walking. Walk On! |

A Reminder:
|
|
Walk On to improve the quality of your life. Walk On to improve your relationship with those you love. Walk On with a business colleague to "think out of the box". Walk On, so you and those around you will benefit from the experience. What could be easier or simpler than walking? It's free, it's available, it's rewarding, it's your lifestyle choice. Walk On!
