May's Health Tip - Maximizing Your Massage

People who make massage a regular part of their lives know the many benefits it has to offer. Massage is more than the blind mechanical application of a series of techniques. An intuitive, sensitive and focussed body worker can, with skill and knowledge, address the whole person during a massage session.

It's easy to understand that the person providing the massage will have a lot to do with the quality of the massage received. What is less understood is that the person receiving the massage has an important role to play in making the experience even more beneficial. With some forethought, a bit of preparation and a positive attitude, massage can be an opportunity to release physical and emotional tension and distress. Here are a few tips and suggestions that will help you maximize your next massage experience.

Time:

Give yourself permission to a leisurely massage. Allow yourself to fully enjoy the session by not "squeezing" your massage time into a tight schedule. If possible allow some "non-busy" time after the massage to integrate your experience. A short walk is a great option.

Food:

Enjoy your massage on a light stomach. Refrain from eating two hours before your session and refrain from caffeine, chocolate, sugar or other stimulants.

Water:

Drink extra water after your session. This assists the organs in filtering out toxins that were released from the muscles during the massage.

Clothing:

If possible wear loose clothing. This is especially beneficial after your session.

Makeup Etc.:

Come to the session as natural as possible. If feasible prior to your session, avoid using make-up, hairspray, perfumes, colognes etc.

Communication:

Feel free to vocalize any needs or concerns that may come up before, during or after the massage. Areas of tension, pain, knotting, or intense physical discomfort need to be communicated. It is crucial to give relevant, accurate, and up to date health information.

Your feedback on such issues as room temperature, music volume, levels of personal comfort etc. is important.

Talking:

Talking during a massage is a matter of your personal choice. Sometimes silence enhances the massage experience. Sometimes expressing what is on our minds, helps to release tension. I respect either decision.

Internal Distractions:

The above tips and suggestions address external issues. However, your inner state of being is just as important.

Most of us carry a fair amount of mental anxiety. This usually manifests itself in the form of inner chatter. As much as possible, give yourself permission to let go of your day to day worries. Set aside the past and the future. Be completely present in the moment. Remind yourself that for the next hour or so, the most "productive" thing you can possibly do is to let go, receive and enjoy.

I know that for some, the above suggestion is easier said than done. If you find that no matter what, you cannot relax and quiet the mind, then take a different approach. Rather than "trying" to stop the chatter, turn it around. Allow the chatter to be there. You are now an observer. Your attitude is one of healthy curiosity. Simply be present and watch your thoughts go by as if it were an external event in your life. For the duration of this exercise, suspend your judgements. For this brief moment, your thoughts are neither good nor bad, neither positive nor negative, productive or counter productive. They just are! Your only interest is in watching and observing. Breath as deeply and as fully as possible throughout the exercise.

You will find that adopting this kind of objective stance towards your thoughts will in time have beneficial results. It will help you to slowly disengage and let go of the emotional and mental investment linked to your worries and anxieties.

This kind of exercise gives you objective ground on which to stand. It is of value not only during a massage session but at anytime where the pressures of life seem overwhelming. Try it, for example, the next time you are impatiently stuck in traffic.

You can also use the body awareness exercise found below as a way to decrease mental chatter.

Body Awareness and Letting Go:

Body awareness is another important internal consideration. As mentioned above it's important to communicate areas of tension and discomfort with the person giving you your massage. You can, however, assist in the process by trying the following.

Once you are comfortably settled and ready for your massage, take some time and direct your awareness to your body. Focus your thoughts, scan your body and notice any areas where you are holding tension. Sometimes this bringing of awareness to points of tension in the body will, by itself, be enough to cause release.

If the tension persists, however, you can try this simple relaxation technique. Take notice of your breathing. Breath deeply and fully. As you breath in, visualize your breath entering into your body through the point where you are holding the tension. As you breath out, visualize your breath moving out of your body through the same point. See your breath as a soothing gentle energy that dissipates all holding, pain, tension and discomfort.

In time you will find that this bringing of awareness to the body will facilitate a letting go of tension and stress. As with the suggestion above on decreasing chatter, this exercise can be beneficial at any time of your day.

In Conclusion:

I hope you find the tips and suggestions made here, to be helpful. I was a bit hesitant in writing this Health Tip as I did not want it to turn into another "to do" list. I purposely stayed away as much as I could from "don'ts" and "shoulds". The suggestions made above are just that, suggestions. With little effort, they will make your massage experience more beneficial.

Many people who come to see me, do so because they need (more than anything else) to just "stop everything". I recognize this and strive to honour it in my work. I see my work as an opportunity for my clients to "let go". It is my hope that for the time they are with me, they will be able to stop everything, take a deep breath, relax, release, receive, and enjoy!

Lifestyle Choice:

Most of us are willing to contribute, work hard and make sacrifices to create a good life for ourselves and for those we love. It's a lot more difficult, however, to see the value in taking time for ourselves. During a massage or any other type of restorative body work, the most optimal attitude is one where we are open to receive. Optimizing your massage experience necessitates a capacity to let go (or at least to set aside) our tasks, goals, ambitions, anxieties and worries. Developing a receptive attitude to self care is a lifestyle choice. It is not only beneficial for ourselves but also for all those around us who depend on our well being.

Quotes:

"...Feminine spirit connects us with each other through caring. I see feminine spirit as a human energy that compels us to quest, to engage in the psychological process of self-discovery; it is an impulse towards freedom...We know the feminine spirit through the way we feel about ourselves, each other, and the way we feel together..."

Net Gems:

This section of the newsletter, features locations of interest on the World Wide Web. To lighten my work load, my husband, John, has agreed to take over the writing of this feature.

Banner The Jimmy Bowskill Band

This site features Jimmy Bowskill, an amazing young man making a big hit in the world of the Blues. Born on B.B. King's birthday he is now all of 14 years old. At 11 he was invited to play on stage with Jeff Healey at his night club in Toronto. How he got into a night club at that age is another story already told on the Vinyl Café! He has performed at too many festivals to list here. He's also been featured on shows such as CBC's Sounds Like Canada and CBC's Metro Morning.

Listed below are some of the key pages to accessing this site:

Home Page
Sound Samples
Video Samples (If you only go to one page on this site, this should be the one. You can download any of the video samples by "right clicking" on their links and then choosing "Save Target As".)
Band's Bio (including Jimmy's)
Photo Gallery
Newspaper Clippings

Seeing so much talent and charisma in this young man, along with a good helping of natural graciousness, is an inspiration to anyone who values the creative spirit. Have a look, have a listen!
