November's Health Tip - Stinging Nettle
Anyone interested in a natural approach
to health will find herbal teas and herbal infusions to be a great
asset. Abundantly found and very affordable, they both make a great
ally in maintaining a high level of health. Having enjoyed a certain
popularity in the 60s and 70s, they are presently still viewed as
a bit of an oddity with the general public. This is a shame, considering
the history of herbs as one of humanities' greatest source of healing.
I've recently become acquainted with "Stinging Nettle". I am
amazed to see how beneficial it can be. Using the dried bulk leaves and
preparing them as an infusion, Stinging Nettle will provide you with many
health benefits. Stinging Nettle is a tonic that will nourish, cleanse
and revitalize many different organs and systems within the body. It's
also a great energy and stamina booster on days when you feel tired and
sluggish. Stinging Nettle's elemental content includes many vitamins and
minerals such as iron, silica, potassium, manganese, sulphur and vitamins
A & C.
Susun S. Weed in her Book (Menopausal
Years - The Wise Woman Way) lists the following benefits of drinking
an infusion of Stinging Nettle:
- Nourish, strengthen, rebuild kidneys
and adrenals
- Ease and eliminate cystitis, bloat
and incontinence
- Rehydrate dry vaginal tissue
- Nourish and energize the endocrine
glands
- Nourish and rejuvenate the cardiovascular
system
- Normalize weight
- Ease and prevent sore joints
- Relieve constipation and reduce hemorrhoids
- Create strong, flexible bones
- Stabilize blood sugar
- Reduce fatigue and exhaustion; improve
stamina
- Reduce and eliminate headaches
- Nourish and support the immune system
- Nourish and heal the digestive system
- Nourish and strengthen the nervous
system

I can personally vouch for many of the above benefits and highly
recommend Susun's
book.
There are many ways of using Stinging Nettle. While making a tea
with the bulk leaves is the most common method, making an herbal
infusion provides more potent benefits. Again Susun Weed writes
a wonderful article
on her
web site about the advantages of using herbal infusions over
teas.

|
To make an herbal infusion add a cup of
dried leaves to a litre container of water that was brought to a
boil. Make sure you use a container that will not break from boiling
water, such as a canning jar etc. Seal and let stand overnight.
Strain out the leaves and drink within a day and a half. Two to
four cups a day is recommended. Your can read more on preparing
an herbal infusion here.
Stinging Nettle is available at most natural food stores (ex:
Nature's Fare). Buying the bulk leaves tends to give you a fresher
more potent product. Packaging should be air tight and opaque to
protect the leaves. Exposure to light and air will weaken the medicinal
properties of any herb. Store in a dark, cool place.

Caution:
To the best of my knowledge, there are no reported health
risks associated with Stinging Nettle. Susun recommends to not
use the fresh "flowering" Stinging Nettle for food or
medicine.

Lifestyle Choice:
The beauty of drinking herbal teas is in the
simple pleasure they give and the healthy benefits they provide. As with
most positive lifestyle choices the benefits of becoming acquainted with
herbs goes far beyond the immediate experience. A wealth of knowledge
about our bodies and our health opens for us, as we introduce healing
herbs into our daily routine. We now witness with awe and appreciation
the mystery and wisdom of nature as it provides us with these wonderful
allies to assist us to optimum health.

Quotes:

no medicine, but will interest his patient in the care of the human frame,
in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease..."

mind can study any living creature, however humble without being struck
with enthusiasm at its marvellous structure and properties..."
