This

Last
time you responded to someone who asked you about the role of grief
in our lives. What about anger? How do you view this emotion? This Month's Response:As
in the case with grief, anger is not an easy emotion to come to
terms with. Nevertheless, I refrain from any kind of intellectual
negation of it. Whether we like it or not, anger is an emotional
reality. Like all emotions it serves a purpose and repressing, ignoring
or devaluing it comes at a price. When we see an injustice being
committed, anger is the emotion that will move us to action. When
boundaries are broken in relationships, it is our anger that urges
us to stand up and take notice. Without anger there is a danger
of living a bland, apathetic and lethargic life. Anger alerts us
and points us in the direction that we need to go. |

Author and Storyteller, Michael Meade has helped me with understanding another aspect of anger. In his book, Men and the Water of Life, he distinguishes anger from rage. Anger is more pointed, more personal and more immediate. Rage is more explosive, scattering, impersonal and usually rooted in the past. While we can have a certain level of clarity when we are angry, rage tends to blind us (blind with rage). While we can be angry and still quite lucid, rage can take hold of us to the point of totally erratic behaviour. The reason for the explosive nature of rage is that it is often the product of deep seated shame caused by early childhood violations.
Focusing now on anger and expressing it honeslty, there is no magic solution and no easy way to integrate it. Contemplation, reflection and acknowledgement are definitely a start. It can also be about timing. We can acknowledge to ourselves that we are angry and choose to wait for the right time to express it. Not all situations are safe for the expression of anger. Expressions of anger are often received as an accusation of blame and will in turn trigger anger in response. It's also a question of how directly and honestly we can get to the emotion and not intellectualize the process. A lot will depend on the maturity of the people involved and the ability to stand in the territory of anger without automatically reacting negatively.
I do a lot of work around anger with people that come to see me. By providing a safe and non-judgemental environment for genuine emotion to come through, I give my clients some simple tools to allow anger to come out in an non-destructive way. As with all emotions, I always look to the body, am guided by its wisdom and am vigilante as to where it is trying to go.
